What is the difference between a foot doctor, a chiropodist and a podiatrist?
The term “foot doctor” is a colloquial term, predominantly used in America. It is not a specific qualification. It’s an informal way to refer to a podiatrist.
Chiropodist and podiatrist are often used interchangeably, with “podiatrist” being the modern and more comprehensive term. Chiropody generally refers to traditional foot care, such as the treatment of corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, and basic foot ailments.
Today, however, many countries have shifted to using podiatrist as the standard term.
A podiatrist typically has broader qualifications and training than a traditional chiropodist. A podiatrist is an accredited and licensed healthcare professional who diagnoses, treats, and prevents conditions related to not just the feet, but also ankles, and lower limbs. The term “podiatrist” is widely recognised in Australia, the United States, Canada, and other regions as the standard term for qualified foot health specialists.
Podiatrists undergo extensive university education and training, often including surgical training, biomechanics, and sports medicine. They are qualified to manage a broader range of conditions, from general foot care to complex conditions like sports injuries, diabetic foot care, and corrective surgeries.
